Founder and editor of the very useful Vinography.com wine blog, Alder Yarrow was one of the first to start the blogging trend. San Francisco Magazine has called him “The Wine World’s Brightest Cyberstar” and he is widely accepted as a pioneer of wine blogging. His Vinography.Com blog has been published daily since 2004, and was nominated for a James Beard Award in 2013. For trying to achieve it also, I can say that the daily publishing is quite impressive.
Alder regularly speaks at events such as the Aspen Food & Wine Classic, Flavor! Napa Valley, and the Symposium for Professional Wine Writers. He writes occasionally for publications such as The World of Fine Wine and Fine Cooking magazine, and is the author of The Essence of Wine, a very visual, stunning book that was named one of the best wine books of 2014 by The New York Times and won the coveted Chairman’s Prize at the 2015 Louis Roederer International Wine Writers Awards. He is also the author of the Sonoma and Marin County chapter of DK Publishing’s Opus Vino. Let’s add to all that, his more recent collaboration as columnist for Jancis Robinson and the world of American wine.
With these years of dedicated work, in 2013 Alder was inducted into the Wine Media Guild of New York’s Wine Writers Hall of Fame, an honor he shares with only 22 other living wine writers.

When did you realize that wine was a passion?
My real love of wine began while I was studying for a time in England. The food served in the colleges at Oxford University in the early Nineties was awful, and so I found myself cooking for myself more and more. Thinking that the civilized thing to do would be to drink wine with a home cooked dinner, I would go down to a local bottle shop and buy a wine. Too intimidated to talk with anyone at the shop, I’d simply look on the lower shelves that I could afford and pick a label that looked interesting.
I really enjoyed this exploration, which opened up a whole world of flavors and grapes and places to me, and so when I returned home to the US and completed my degree, I continued to buy wine and cook a lot, both with increasing passion.
Quand avez-vous réalisé que le vin vous passionnait?
Mon véritable amour du vin a commencé pendant que j’étudiais en Angleterre. La nourriture servie dans les collèges à l’université d’Oxford au début des années 90 était affreuse, et donc je me suis retrouvé à cuisiner pour moi de plus en plus. Pensant que la chose civilisée à faire serait de boire du vin avec mes dîners, je me rendais à un magasin local pour acheter un vin. Trop intimidé pour parler avec quelqu’un à la boutique, je regardais simplement sur les étagères inférieures que je pouvais me permettre et choisir une étiquette qui semblait intéressante.
J’ai vraiment apprécié cette exploration, qui a ouvert un monde entier de saveurs, de cépages et d’endroits, et ainsi quand je suis retourné aux États-Unis et terminé mon diplôme, j’ai continué à acheter du vin et cuisiner, avec une passion croissante.
What is your favorite wine event?
In terms of events that I get to attend with some regularity, I really enjoy the International Pinot Noir Celebration in McMinnville, Oregon for its combination of great wines from all over the world, interesting discussions, incredible food, and spectacular weather. It’s a wine event that is impossible to not enjoy.
On the other hand, I managed to obtain an invitation to La Paulee de Meursault a number of years ago, and that remains one of my favorite wine experiences.

What are your plans for the upcoming year?
For the first time in a long while, I do not have a wine trip planned for the coming year. I have a day job helping to run a design agency (www.cibosf.com) and our business is very strong at the moment, so I’m doing less wine writing than I would like to.

What is the most remarkable bottle you have had the chance to taste?
I’m quite lucky to have tasted a number of remarkable bottles of wine, any one of which would be a good answer to this question, but today I’m remembering a bottle of 1988 Dom Perignon that was particularly spectacular. There’s just something about old Champagne that I adore — in all its salty, nutty goodness.

Which wine tourism destination is the most interesting in your opinion?
Well, I can tell you that I am quite keen to get to Corsica, Sardinia, and the Canary Islands at the moment, as I love those wines and really want to experience the places that they came from. But if someone asked me where to go to have a great wine tour, I’d be inclined to send them to South Africa or New Zealand at the moment. In both places the combination of the wines, the natural beauty, the food, and the people are quite extraordinary.

Eh bien, je peux vous dire que j’aimerais beaucoup visiter la Corse, la Sardaigne et les îles Canaries en ce moment. J’aime ces vins et j’ai vraiment envie de découvrir les lieux d’où ils viennent. Mais si quelqu’un me demande où aller pour avoir une escapade vin géniale, je serais incliné à les envoyer en Afrique du Sud ou en Nouvelle-Zélande pour le moment. Dans les deux endroits, la combinaison des vins, la beauté naturelle, la nourriture et les gens sont tout à fait extraordinaires.
