From Rioja to Priorat to Bierzo.
While the spotlight in Rioja is mostly on Alta, Alavesa and, of course, Tempranillo, we barely hear about the Rioja Oriental, formerly, still very recently called Rioja Baja. Yet, it is part of Rioja to the same point of the two latter. It is also the home of Palacios Remondo, the prestigious family owned Bodega where the now famous Winemaker Alvaro Palacios started. José Palacios Remondo was the patriarch of the family, and the head of the winery he created in 1945, Palacios Remondo in Alfaro. He then went on his own in an ancient vineyard of Priorat in 1989 and later, joined his nephew, Ricardo Pérez, on a very interesting and innovative project in Bierzo called Descendientes de J. Palacios, in honor to Alvaro Palacios’ father.
Notably, his admirable work includes propelling the two amazing and unique regions of Priorat and Bierzo into the spotlights. Also, refocusing on old garnacha vines, the traditional variety that had fallen out of favour in Rioja Baja. He’s calling Garnacha “The queen Grape of Rioja Baja†and encourage producers to come back to this variety that was once traditional there. He succeeded in making a new, more modern style of priorat, specially using Cabernet and Syrah, to support the local Garnacha and Cariñena grapes until he reached success with his the old-wine L’Ermita vineyard In 1993. This wine reached astronomical prices ( over 1000$) and defied the limit of the appellation just to create more affordable wines afterwards. Bierzo was a lesser-known region before the joint venture between this uncle and nephew started. Now, MencÃa, the local grape is a very looked for variety and recognised as an intensely flavored  and amazing food wine.

Tandis que les projecteurs de Rioja se concentrent surtout sur les régions Alta, Alavesa et, bien sûr, le Tempranillo, on entend rarement parler de la Rioja Oriental, anciennement, très récemment appelée Rioja Baja. Pourtant, il fait partie de Rioja au même point que les deux derniers. C’est aussi l’emplacement de la Bodega Palacios Remondo, la prestigieuse propriété familiale où a commencé le désormais célèbre vigneron Alvaro Palacios. José Palacios Remondo était le patriarche de la famille, et le chef de la cave qu’il a créé en 1945, Palacios Remondo à Alfaro. Alvaro est ensuite parti seul dans un ancien vignoble du Priorat en 1989 et plus tard, a rejoint son neveu, Ricardo Pérez, sur un projet très intéressant et novateur à Bierzo appelé Descendientes de J. Palacios, en l’honneur du père d’Alvaro..
Notamment, son travail admirable comprend la propulsion des deux régions uniques et étonnantes de Priorat et Bierzo dans les projecteurs. Aussi, un recentrage sur les vieilles vignes de grenache, la variété traditionnelle qui était tombée en disgrâce dans la Rioja Baja. Il appelle la Garnacha “La variété reine de Rioja Baja” et encourage les producteurs à revenir à cette variété qui était autrefois traditionnelle. Il a réussi à faire un nouveau style plus moderne de Priorat, en utilisant notamment le Cabernet et la Syrah, pour soutenir les cépages locaux Garnacha et Cariñena jusqu’à ce qu’il atteigne un succès immense avec son vignoble L’Ermita en 1993. Ce vin a atteint des prix astronomiques (plus de 1000 $) et a défié la limite de l’appellation juste pour créer des vins plus abordables par la suite. Bierzo était une région moins connue avant le début de l’aventure entre cet oncle et son neveu. Maintenant, MencÃa, le cépage local est une variété très recherchée et reconnue comme étant intensément aromatique et fantastique en accords.
