A visit at Cos d’Estournel

If there is one stand out feature of this property, then it must surely be the architecturally stunning winery itself. It is the first building you will see when entering the St-Estephe Appellation from Pauillac, and it’s impossible not to be impressed by the exotic grandeur, complete with genuine carved doors from Zanzibar and Asian inspired Pagodas. Even with pouring rain outside, it still appears as magnificent. I can’t begin to imagine what it would have looked like with sunshine.

Louis Gaspard d’Estournel is the founder of Cos d’Estournel. He thrived for many years through debt and experiments to fully develop the estate and make the wine famous. The owner preferred selling his wine directly to his customers. In fact, Chateau Cos d’Estournel was sold in many countries, especially India.

Louis Gaspard d’Estournel would live to see his wine designated a Deuxième Grand Cru du Médoc by the negociants of Bordeaux but unfortunately, he passed away two years before the 1855 Bordeaux Classification which officially recognized Cos d’Estournel as a Second Growth.

In 1995, Cos d’Estournel became one of the first brands to begin promoting the sale of their wines in China. Later, in 2000, the estate was bought by Michel Reybier. He instigated a modernization of the winemaking facilities as well as other renovation.

INDIAN STYLE

The curiosity and search of exportation country for the wine often led Mister d’Estournel in Asia. British officers stationed in India would begin savoring his wine as early as 1838. He had an open mind to the world and a fascination for other countries. India was the main inspiration behind the original style of the castle with traditional pagodas and asian architecture. His obsession for the foreign and the exotic, would earn him the nickname of Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe.
